Preschool improvements

No crying at pre-school any more. I whine a bit but still don't like to be dropped off. Usually play with 2 other kids there and sing. It is more fun now.

The Christmas season begins with the first advent Sunday. Traditional households have a advent wreath in the family room and the walls, doors and windows are tastefully decorated with handmade German Christmas crafts. The wreaths are decorated either modern, with trendy colored decorations, or in traditional colors with orange slices, cinnamon sticks, apple slices and pinecones. Each wreath holds four candles, representing each of the four advent Sundays before Christmas. With each new Sunday, another candle gets lit so that by the last Sunday before Christmas, all four candles are burning. The lighting of the advent candle is a special moment in the homes with children. The family spends a quiet moment together.

On the 6th of December, the German version of Santa Claus visits the children. His name is Sankt Nikolaus. On the night of the 5th of December, the kids place their cleaned shoes outside the door. The next morning, the shoes are filled with goodies.

Assisting Sankt Nikolaus is Knecht Ruprecht. He is normally dressed in a brown robe and carrying rods in his belt to give the bad children and a basket on his back full of sacks of tangerines, peanuts, spiced cookies and chocolate to give to the good children. Theodor Storm (1817-1888) wrote a popular poem about Knecht Ruprecht which is learned still today by all of the children in school.

Christmas Eve in Germany
Traditionally on the 24th of December, on Christmas Eve, the father of the house solely decorates the tree in the morning and the room gets closed off so that the Christkind (translated: Christ Child but is an angelic figure) can bring the gifts in the afternoon while the family is at church services. The mother of the house spends the morning decorating the home for the occasion and cooking a small dinner which is often a small meal like Bratwurst and Sauerkraut. Some choose to serve a salad or a potato salad with the meat. The potato salad varies, depending on which region of Germany you live in. The northern area of Germany serves a potato salad with a mayonaise type of dressing. In the south of Germany, a potato salad can contain vinegar and mustard. The mother also spends her time preparing for the Christmas dinner for Christmas day in advance.

The kids get to see and open their gifts after the evening meal and when it is dark outdoors. This adds to the mood. The tree gets lit for the first time with real candles or with traditional white lights.

Christmas day is family day. The family goes to church in the morning and comes home to eat their Christmas dinner. Often friends or relatives are invited to join them.

In German kitchens, lots and lots of goodies are being baked for the holidays! The most traditional of the baked goods is Lebkuchen. The taste can be compared to gingerbread but in its own unique way. Other wonderful tasty seasonal baked goods are Vanilla Scones or Vanille Kipferln, Christstollen, Linzer Sterne (by Schwarzwald-Tage.de), Marzipantorte, Rumkugeln, Dominosteine, Cinnamon Stars or Zimtsterne and so much more.

Big boy gives

Today, I gathered some toys I don't use any more for other 'babies'. I'm a big boy now don't need baby toys any more. Merry Christmas!

Fun at pre-school

I'm liking pre-school a lot better now. I still cry when daddy drops me off though. But I help Miss Diana (the teacher) cleaning up, wait for my turn for the bike (without crying) etc. Miss Diana told my dad that I do a lot better :)

Ich weine zwar immer noch wenn Daddy mich absetzt, aber Miss Diana (die Lehrerin) hat meinem Vater gesagt, dass ich mich sehr viel besser eingelebt habe. Ich helfe der Lehrerin beim Aufraeumen, warte auf das kleine Fahrrad bis ich dran bin (ohne zu weinen) etc. :)]

Another day in preschool

Another day in preschool. Today we had a Thanksgiving party and I brought mashed potatoes. I'm still crying in the morning when daddy drops me off, but I have fun during the day.

no preschool

I was supposed to go to pre-school today as we had a holiday yesterday...but I threw up last night and had a fever. So I slept in today and stayed home. Not eating much but feeling much better. Still 99.5 deg F.

Another day at the pre-school

I went to pre-school again today. I was sad when I walked to the car...I knew that daddy would just drop me off :( I cried again when he left me at the pre-school. I was playing on my own most of the time, had pizza, listened to circle time etc. I laughed a couple of times too and connected to a girl there later in the day. Sat on the teacher's lab for some one-on-one time and had a solid nap. I still don't like pre-school too much...

[Heute war ich wieder in der Vorschule. Ich war traurig als wir in die Garage gingen...ich wusste, dass Daddy mich bei der Vorschule absetzen wollte :( Ich weinte wieder als er die Vorschule verliess. Ich habe tagsueber ueberwiegend alleine gespielt, hatte Pizza, Geschichten zugehoert etc. Ich habe auch ein paar Mal gelacht und dem Maedchen dort naehergekommen. Sass auf dem Schoss der Lehrerin und hatte ein gutes Nickerchen. Ich mag die Vorschule aber noch immer nicht so richtig... ]

First day of pre-school

 
Today was the first official day in pre-school. I have been there before, ~4 times, but mom was always around. Dad dropped me off in the morning but I did not want him to leave. I cried for 15 minutes. The rest of the day was better. Behaved very good and only cried a couple of times. Took a nap, ate my sandwich and listened to the teacher.  I guess I like it....


[Heute war der erste offizielle Tag in der Vorschule. War dort 4 Mal mit Mom. Daddy hat mich morgens dorthin gebracht auf dem Weg zur Arbeit aber ich wollte nicht, dass er geht. Ich habe 15 Minuten geweint. Der Rest des Tages war besser. Ich habe mich sehr gut verhalten und der Lehrerin zugehoert. Ich habe nur ein Paar mal geweint. Ich habe ein Mittagsschlaefchen gehalten und mein Sandwich gegessen. Werde am Donnerstag wieder hingehen.]

Halloween 2010

My plans...

ok. I'm feeling a lot better. I'm tough. The tonsils are not swollen any more, ear seems to be fine and I have a couple of days more of my antibiotics :)

BTW, I can not open the child locks in the kitchen. My parents are not happy.

Today is Stephen's birthday (Happy Birthday buddy!) and we all go there at 4pm.

What else....oh yes. My first official day in preschool is Tuesday 11/2 (voting day). I have been to the preschool 4 times to check it out, but now it is time to start (with no parents there): Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30 to 5pm. This will definitely help my speech delay...


[ok. Ich fuehle mich sehr viel besser und die Mandeln sind nicht mehr geschwollen, Ohren ok. Ich muss noch mein Antibiotikum fuer ein paar Tage nehmen.

Uebrigens, ich kann jetzt die Kindersicherungen in der Kueche oeffnen. Meine Eltern sind nicht begeistert.

Heute ist Stephen's Geburtstag (Herzlichen Glueckwunsch!) und wir werden alle um 4 Uhr hingehen.]

Am Dienstag (Wahltag) wird mein erster offizieller Tag im der Vorschule sein. Ich habe mir dort 4 mal alles angeschaut und es ist jetzt Zeit ohne Eltern dort zu spielen: Dienstags und Donnerstags 8:30 bis 17 Uhr. Das wird meiner Spracher viel helfen.

Viral infection

I have a viral infection: ear infection and swollen tonsils. No fever though. I got Amoxicillin and should feel better soon. The pediatrician took a swab from my tonsils for some tests.

Big Storm

A big storm moved through San Diego last night starting at 2am...thunderstorm, lightning...and I slept through it...
Dogs got scared on jumped on the bed. Now, it's raining and raining and raining.

Fun in class today

I had a lot of fun in the free government class today: we dressed, undressed and bathed a baby doll and I learned how to use scissors.

Pre-school...I'm coming

It's time now. Last Thursday, I checked out the pre-school down the road and played a little bit while my parents talked to the director. I will attend the pre-school a couple of times to see if I get along with the other toddler and the teacher, then we decide. They have cool stuff, big play-ground and even a fish tank. I could go twice a week for a full day. It will help my language and social skills.

[Es ist Zeit. Ich habe mir die Vorschule letzten Donnerstag angeschaut und etwas gespielt. Meine Eltern habe sich mit der Direktorin unterhalten. Ich werde fuer einige Tage mir alles ansehen und schaun ob ich mit den anderen und der Lehrerin zurechtkomme. Dann entscheiden wir. Die haben wirklich coole Dinge, grossen Spielplatz und sogar ein Aquarium. Ich koennte dort 2x in der Woche ganztagig hingehen.]

Arm & Hammer

I love the new Arm & Hammer product...the one for the nursery. It has a nice smell and form. I played with it for days without break. I can also say 'Arm & Hammer'.

More locks

I am now tall enough to open the locks on the front and garage door. Needed a new lock with key for the garage door and a chain for the front door.

[Ich bin jezt gross genug um die Schloesser in der Haustuer und der Garagentuer zu oeffnen. Wir mussten ein neues Schloss mit Schluessel fuer die Garagentuer kaufen und brauchen eine Kette fuer die Haustuer.]

Speech update

Still going to the speech therapy. Dad came with me this week. I'm doing ok in the first 15-20 minutes but then I get bored and want out. I know that it is in me but I'm not using the words yet. However, I'm making slow improvements...more words and some combined words. Focusing on 'I want' and 'I see' now.

[Gehe noch immer zur Sprachtherapie. Diese Woche ging Daddy mit mir. Ich arbeite gut in den ersten 15-20 Minuten, aber dann wird es mir zu langweilig. Ich weiss, dass ich die Woerter aussprechen kann... Ich verbessere mich langsam: mehr Woerter und zusammenhaengende Woerter. Arbeite jetzt an 'Ich moechte' und 'Ich sehe'.]

It's HOT man

Last Wednesday was the hottest day in Los Angeles since record keeping (1877) with 113 degrees in LA downtown. Not much better here in San Diego. Then we had thunderstorms, rain, power outage and today it is again very very hot.

[Letzten Mittwoch war es mit 113 Fahrenheit der heisseste Tag seit 1877 (Beginn der Aufzeichungen) in Los Angeles. Es war nicht viel besser hier in San Diego. Dann hatten wir Gewitter, Regen, Stromausfall und heute ist es wieder sehr heiss.

The new season of 'next iron chef' is starting this Sunday. My favorite show besides the 'iron chef' and sesame street. I will stay up for this one.

Forehead meets wall

I ran into the wall last week - the corner. I was looking down and did not see it. There was a big swelling on my forehead. Ice and Heredoit help reducing the swelling. I did not cry much. I'm tough. I marked the location of that wall in my notebook. Next time I know ;)

[Letzte Woche bin ich in die Wand gerannt. Ich habe nach unten geschaut und habe die Ecke nicht gesehen. Die linke Seite meiner Stirn war geschwollen. Eis und Heredoit haben die Schwellung schnell verringert und ich habe nicht viel geweint. Ich bin hart im Nehmen. Ich habe jetzt die Position der Wand in mein Notizheft eingetragen...fuer das naechste Mal.]

My dad completed the naturalization process this morning: oath ceremony. The citizenship class was 500+ people strong from over 70 countries. 3 from Germany, ~10 from France. Most were from Mexico and Philippines. He is an American now :):)
But paperwork is not over yet. SSN changes, passport application, voter registration...

[Mein Daddy hat den Einbuergerungsprozess heute mit der Vereidigung beended. In der Halle waren 500+ Leute aus ueber 70 Laendern: 3 von Deutschland, ~10 aus Frankreich. Ueberwiegend Mexikaner und Phillipinos. Mein Daddy ist jetzt Amerikaner :):)
Aber der Papierkram ist noch nicht beended: Versicherungen, Reisepass, Wahlbezirk anmelden etc. ]

Went to the mall today to get new PJs and new shoes. I'm a 8.5 wide now. Got 2 new pairs. Cuddled with a cute golden retriever puppy in the mall's pet store.

Daddy passed the INS interview

I forgot to tell you...daddy passed the INS interview a couple of weeks ago. Was an English and writing test and history / government test. Next step is the oath ceremony.
